Alisson chose his all-time favourite Premier League moment with Liverpool, ignoring his dramatic last-gasp victory over West Brom in 2021.
Remarkably, Alisson Becker has declared his favourite Premier League moment while wearing a Liverpool shirt to be his save from Miguel Almiron against Newcastle, turning down the injury-time winner against West Brom two years ago.
After joining the Reds in 2018, the 31-year-old Alisson has been a revelation in the goal, resolving an issue that had dogged the team since Pepe Reina’s final days at Anfield.
His contributions have been crucial to Liverpool’s recent success, as evidenced by his 43.2 percent clean sheet ratio and eighth position on the all-time list of goalkeepers with the most appearances for the club. Just take a look at that block against Arkadiusz Milik of Napoli in 2018—it nearly won the Champions League knockout stages and the tournament itself.
However, there are also quite a few Premier League instances that spring to mind. In an interview for their ‘Ultimates’ series, the Brazil international was given a tournament tree-style chart that featured only eight of his most noteworthy performances in the English premier league.
The first struggle was deciding between his double-save against Norwich City on the first day of the 2021–2022 season and his denial of Miguel Almiron during 10-man Liverpool’s thrilling victory at St. James’ Park earlier this season, which earned him the league’s Save of the Month title.
Selecting the first choice, he gave an explanation: “A goalie must pursue every ball; they cannot simply watch it enter the net. To be honest, I tried my hardest in this one, so you have to always give it your best shot. It was a very challenging save that was also visually pleasing.
“At the end of the day, the three points helped the team, and it always feels good.” While both saves are remarkable, the one against Newcastle is the better one.”
The No. 1 then decided to use his fingertip save to keep Dele Alli from scoring in the away 2-2 tie that sent Tottenham to the next round in the 2021–2022 season. This decision was made in lieu of the close-range save he made to deny Southampton’s Samuel Edozie in the 3-1 victory at Anfield the previous season.
The identical choice was made for his two Premier League assists to Mohamed Salah, one during the title-winning season of 2019–20 against Manchester United and the other during the previous season’s 1-0 victory against Manchester City. The contribution against United in this case was revealed on
His on-field embrace with Jurgen Klopp following Divock Origi’s 96th-minute winner against Everton in 2018/19, or his own header at The Hawthorns in the final minute that proved important to 2020–21’s Champions League qualifying, were the eight scenarios that were chosen.
“Not many things – ‘try to score, be there to help’,” the goalie said when asked what was going through his mind during the build-up. It was one of those desperate moments where you just want to help whatever you can. It had a beautiful header.”
Alisson chose that moment of great significance since it was also filled with emotion as he celebrated and looked up to the sky because his father had just died away.
The South American was having difficulties, which was unusual over the previous five years, and these four choices set up the following two that would determine the so-called final.
He began by saving Almiron over Dele Alli, saying, quite movingly, “I have a feeling this one will be special for us.”
After that, Alisson said that if it had come down to a goalkeeping error, he would have removed his winner against West Brom at this juncture. He said, “As a goalkeeper, I shouldn’t go for the goal, but I will go for the goal.”
When it came time to choose his “Ultimate Premier League moment,” he instantly went with the save from just two months prior. “As a goalie, I had to make the save,” he told himself. “I’m sorry, I think people will be disappointed with me for not picking the goal.”
“In a few years we will have to do another one,” Alisson continued.
