Even though Spring Training has begun, the New York Mets still have time in the offseason to add players to their roster.

As the club convenes at their facilities to get ready for the new season, the front office and coaching staff should ideally be aware of the players vying for a position on the Opening Day roster.

While David Stearns did imply that there would be further transactions this offseason, J.D. Martinez is not appearing to be among them.

“The Mets feel like a long shot and will probably go with Mark Vientos at DH or use the spot to provide semi-rests for stars,” said Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

The Los Angeles Angels may be interested in signing the six-time All-Star as they look to bolster their team, the insider said.

Martinez demonstrated that he could still play at a high level in the Major League Baseball (MLB) at the age of 35, with a slash line of.271/.321/.572 that included 33 home runs and 103 RBI.

After being selected to three consecutive All-Star games going into free agency, he has proven himself to be one of the top hitters in the league.

When the front office goes all in to create a contender, the Mets are searching for experienced players to complement their youthful prospects and assess who should be on the roster going forward.

Although Martinez will undoubtedly be useful for New York this season, winning games is not their main concern.
