Even though Matthew Stafford is still the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, considering his age, it might be time to begin making plans for his eventual departure.Matthew Stafford, the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, just finished one of his best seasons to date.
Having said that, he will also be 36 years old in September of next year when the Rams begin their 2024 campaign.
Stafford will therefore be back under center for the team the following season, but the franchise’s main concern going forward is what will happen to the position when he eventually decides to retire, whether that is in 2025 or much later.
And although some might think the Rams ought to select their future quarterback this spring in the NFL Draft, Bleacher Report has a different suggestion.
Trey Lance, a current backup for the Dallas Cowboys and former No. 3 overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers,
After Lance was the 49ers’ starting quarterback for a while, Brock Purdy took over and quickly took over at quarterback for the rest of the season. Lance was consequently traded by the 49ers to the Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round selection.
Jan. 14, 2024, Detroit, Michigan, USA: Following an NFC wild card game at Ford Field in 2024, quarterbacks Jared Goff (16) of the Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford (9) of the Los Angeles Rams exchange pleasantries.
Lance has not yet seen action for the Cowboys and has been dropped to third string in Dallas behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Put another way, Lance would be a reasonably cheap option to pursue if the Rams were interested in him.
And in this scenario that’s exactly what they get, sending a mere fifth-round pick back to Dallas – a move that would be low-risk, cheap with the potential for very high upside.
