Brett Rypien is on his third team in less than two months and could start for both Rams and Jets
In the event that Brett Rypien becomes a poor man’s Josh Dobbs, he has undoubtedly discovered his calling. Since joining the Los Angeles Rams in May to provide insurance for Matthew Stafford, Rypien has been on the move again. He still has time to start for the New York Jets this season after beating out Stetson Bennett as the backup, starting in Stafford’s place during a humiliating loss to the Green Bay Packers, and being released and signed by the Seattle Seahawks.
With the team’s inconsistent quarterback situation since Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in September, Rypien, who was signed by the Jets on Tuesday, was almost certain to start for New York. Rypien was a member of the Seahawks practice squad. Despite never playing a snap for Seattle, Rypien may end up starting for the Jets sooner than you might think. Rypien and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett were teammates with the Denver Broncos the previous season.
On Monday, there were rumors circulating that Zach Wilson, a third-year player, had rejected the Jets’ request to come off the bench for the third time in his career. Head coach Robert Saleh informed the media that he would not be switching to Wilson this week, regardless of the veracity of those reports. In tandem with Rypien’s addition, New York benched starter Tim Boyle for the game on Sunday.
The Jets currently have Wilson, Rypien, and Trevor Siemian as their active quarterbacks. Rodgers has a 21-day window in which to return from injured reserve, so he could theoretically play in the final two games, but that would need to happen by miracle and someone would have to decide to risk their career for no good reason.
Compared to Rodgers, Rypien appears to have a greater chance of starting for the 4-8 Jets this season.
As a starter, Boyle was 0–2 with four interceptions while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Sunday marked Siemian’s first appearance since signing with the Jets, and he went 5-of-13. Wilson, who has nine fumbles in 10 games and has six touchdowns, seven interceptions, and is connected to current Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, could be a throw-in option for Los Angeles next offseason.
Thus, by the end of 2023, Rypien might start for the Rams and Jets, which was not something that was anticipated at the beginning of the year.
