Christian Falk, a German football journalist, has provided the most recent details regarding Liverpool’s connections to a possible Anfield sporting director candidate.

Although Jorg Schmadtke’s contract is only set to expire in the summer of next year, the Reds may already be considering a replacement for the 59-year-old.

In light of this, it’s thought that Max Eberl, who formerly worked at RB Leipzig in a comparable capacity, has an agreement with both LFC and Bayern Munich regarding a significant backroom position at either team (Sports Zone).

Falk explained in a piece for CaughtOffside that appeared in Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing: “Max Eberl’s future as FC Bayern’s director of sport or if Liverpool can hope to bring him to England will soon be decided.

“The routes are straightforward: Marc Kosicke represents both Jürgen Klopp and Eberl. However, I’ve heard that Bayern will give priority over Liverpool if they come calling. Still up for debate, though, is whether manager Christoph Freund and Eberl are still required in Munich.

“I am aware that Eberl would travel to England as well. He finds Liverpool appealing. He is drawn to FC Bayern, though, even more. His former team as a player and his greatest love is Bayern.”

Even though Falk claimed that Eberl was drawn to Liverpool, it appears that Bayern is Eberl’s first choice. Should the 50-year-old have to choose between the two teams, he would probably go with the Bundesliga winners.

Much, though, may also depend on Munich boss Jan-Christian Dreesen’s decision to give current sporting director Freund more authority; if he does, the team may decide not to hire the former Leipzig player.

After long-serving Michael Edwards left the team 18 months ago, the position has already changed hands twice. If the Reds can lure Eberl to Anfield, it would be an incredible coup and hopefully provide stability.

But even if Schmadtke ends up at Bayern, Liverpool should be able to convince him to stay past the summer given the excellent work he’s done managing a much-needed midfield makeover, which has seen Dominik Szoboszlai in particular prove to be a brilliant acquisition.

It appears that Eberl’s future will depend on how much interest the Bundesliga winners express.
