Despite interest from two major European clubs, Julian Alvarez of Manchester City is apparently likely to stay with the Premier League champions.
When the Treble champions signed Alvarez last year, they pulled off a significant victory because the former River Plate prodigy only cost them about £14 million.
Alvarez has already distinguished himself as a stunning acquisition for Man City, who are currently eighth in the 2023 Premier League net spend standings. He has also had an outstanding start to the new season.
The 23-year-old has made 14 appearances for Man City this season, scoring seven goals and dishing out five assists. According to Football Insider, Barcelona and Real Madrid are ‘interested’ in signing him.
The Premier League team is “really confident” that Alvarez will stay at the club, according to the source, which offers a “big update” on Alvarez potentially leaving Man City.
In March 2023, the 23-year-old signed a new contract at the Etihad Stadium that would keep him with City until 2028, the article continues.
Real Madrid and Barcelona had been mentioned in connection with the forward during discussions surrounding that transfer, and the El Clasico rivals are now once again intrigued.
Alvarez will stay at the club, though, and Man City has no intention of accepting a bid for his services, according to the report.
Man City will benefit greatly from Alvarez staying put, but they do appear certain to lose Kalvin Phillips in the forthcoming winter transfer window.
The England international’s “exit looks likely,” according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, since he “wants to play as a starter.”
“According to insiders, Kalvin Phillips is quite likely to leave Manchester City during the January transfer window. That’s the thought and emotion, as the player has made it very obvious in both public and private that he wants to start games.
“He hoped for a chance at Man City, and he wanted to stay and fight for his spot despite having some other possibilities to leave in the summer. However, it hasn’t occurred for him, and for his England place with the next Euros, it’s crucial for him to be on the pitch.
“Phillips has been extremely professional, and City is pleased with how he has handled himself in this trying situation, but it appears very likely that he will leave.” Although it hasn’t yet been determined in a private meeting, both parties agree that this will be the case in January.”
