Kevin De Bruyne, a standout for Manchester City, may be poised to leave because his employers are delaying giving him a new contract.
The Treble champions at Manchester City are considering releasing star Kevin De Bruyne when his current contract expires.
The Belgian last extended his contract in 2021, utilising statistical research to determine where he should play football in the future. Under Pep Guardiola, he joined Manchester City in 2015 and has since developed into one of the top midfielders in the world of football.
However, at age 32, there is a concern about whether he is physically deteriorating; it now seems that City are doing the same.
According to Football Insider, De Bruyne won’t receive a new contract when his current one expires in 2025 unless his injury record improves.
The playmaker left the Citizens’ championship game against Inter Milan limping after suffering an injury for the second consecutive Champions League final. De Bruyne worked on his fitness during the entire summer and participated in both the Community Shield and the season opener against Burnley, albeit he was forced to leave the latter game due to an injury.
De Bruyne has generally been dependable for City, but there have been times when he has been sidelined by injuries. Most notably, in 2018, he sustained two ligament injuries before missing the rest of the 2018–19 season with thigh issues.
In that season, Bernardo Silva stepped up to help City win back the crown. However, without De Bruyne, Pep Guardiola’s club is currently second in the standings after consecutive losses to Wolves and Arsenal.
When his current contract expires, De Bruyne will be 34, and as a player who relies on his strength and physicality in attack, he could no longer be needed by City.
Transfermarkt places the Belgian’s value at €70 million.
