The contribution of Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions against Everton today has been praised by Jamie Carragher.
In their matchup with the Toffees down to 10 men after the international break, the Reds were a little unfocused. Klopp turned to Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez as Everton piled players in front of the ball.
And as it turned out, it was a wise choice. Particularly impressive was Nunez, who expertly set up Salah for his second goal.
Elliott also provided some much-needed enthusiasm, and after the game, Carragher praised both of them on Twitter. The Reds icon penned, “Nunez & Elliott brilliant from the bench!”
Elliott and Nunez are crucial.
It was always going to take Nunez’s vigour to get things moving because the Reds were struggling quite a bit this afternoon.
Although the Uruguayan wasn’t always precise versus Everton, he was unquestionably successful. Another outstanding performance in red was capped off by his precisely placed assist for Salah.
Undoubtedly, some people were dissatisfied that Nunez wasn’t listed on the team roster when the game began. However, that was never likely given that Uruguay had been travelling with them and had also had a mild cramp.
Darwin nevertheless left his imprint, recording his third Premier League assist of the year.
Elliott nearly had a goal of his own. His powerful long-range shot would have been one of the great Merseyside Derby goals had Jordan Pickford not tipped it over.
Elliott gave the Reds some much-needed vigour despite not scoring, as he was diligent and spirited on the ball.
Both are likely to return to the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against Toulouse after strong outings today.
