Richard Keys has highlighted where the umpires went wrong with a contentious moment for Liverpool at Tottenham by using an instance from the Everton game against Luton Town.
It took VAR three minutes and 20 seconds to decide to award Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the Blues’ 2-1 loss to the Hatters, the presenter remarked on beIN SPORTS on Saturday, September 30.
Keys said he doesn’t accept the PGMOL’s justification that it wanted to keep the game moving because it took so long to make a judgement on the goal in the other game at Goodison Park, after Luis Diaz had a goal erroneously called out for offside and VAR didn’t intervene effectively in the Reds’ 2-1 loss to Spurs.
“I do not buy the reason that we have been given from the production team, which is ‘well it keeps the game moving so we don’t want it to change’,” said Keys.
“Absolute nonsense. Three minutes and 20 seconds at Goodison today to define whether Calvert-Lewin was onside or off, three minutes and 20 seconds.”
Bizarre
The fact that the judgement in the Liverpool game was so erroneous when it was obvious that Diaz was onside is completely odd.
It is not a good sign for anyone to see instances like this happening when there is so much at stake and people spend a lot of money to attend the games, even though Everton supporters won’t have much sympathy for the Reds.
Keys is correct to bring up the Goodison incident since it shouldn’t take more than three minutes to decide whether or not to award a goal.
There are currently way too many high-profile errors being made, and some of the officials’ game management is beyond ludicrous.
The Blues will have been happy to see Calvert-Lewin’s goal recognised, but after ultimately losing the game, it won’t bring them much solace.
