Liverpool defeated Leicester City 3-1 on Wednesday night to go to the Carabao Cup fourth round, where they will play Bournemouth.
The Reds fell behind Enzo Maresca’s Championship-leading team early on, but scored goals from Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Diogo Jota to complete the comeback.
After a difficult start, the significantly altered Liverpool team found their footing. Unknown players like Wataru Endo, who was selected as Anfield Watch’s Player of the Match, and Jarell Quansah impressed, and Curtis Jones stood out at right back.
Jurgen Klopp praised a “top night” with “top goals” following the match.
According to Liverpoolfc.com, he stated: “To be honest, it was an outstanding performance. Minute by minute, we grew into that game.
“With all of Leicester’s talent, we have to admit that as well, obviously a super-coached team, super setup, you can pretty much see, feel, and smell the confidence they have because of their situation, so that made life difficult.” However, we persisted and progressed during the game, both collectively as a team and individually. A lot of performances stepped up, and now we’re here, which I really like.
“[We] totally scored top-notch goals. But I also believe that the goals we didn’t score were rather lovely; they simply didn’t go in, like Harvey’s final shot, which I’m not sure who blocked.
“How I said, looking back, a top night for us because you look at Wataru, how he developed into the game and how dominant he was in the second half, how he really won the balls, passed the ball,” remarked the coach. Although I’m not certain that was his final pass before Dom scored, he most likely passed the ball across the lines once more, which was something he did rather regularly. That was extremely impressive; he played a great game.
“Jarell Quansah, in addition to playing superbly, also set up a goal. To be honest, it’s impossible to see him without grinning. It’s wonderful to see, actually.”
Liverpool was assigned to play Premier League team Bournemouth in the fourth round as compensation for their victory.
