Last night, Curtis Jones led Liverpool against Leicester City while Caoimhin Kelleher assumed leadership after the midfielder was substituted.
Pictures from the game revealed that the Republic of Ireland international was given the armband after Jones was replaced, a move that some Liverpool supporters might find controversial.
Kelleher, 24, was heavily rumored to be leaving Liverpool this summer because he wanted to play as the starting quarterback for an elite Premier League or European team.
However, the talented Cork native stayed at Liverpool, and last night, Kelleher took over as captain after Jones left the field against Leicester.
Many Liverpool supporters will undoubtedly be surprised by the choice to make Kelleher the team captain, but it may result in the goalkeeper staying at Anfield past this season.
As Liverpool’s captain against Leicester, Kelleher would have been proud.
Kelleher’s future at Liverpool still feels very uncertain because he is clearly the No. 2 goalkeeper at Anfield behind superstar Alisson Becker.
Even if the experience might have only lasted a few minutes, the Irish international would have felt tremendous satisfaction while captaining Liverpool last night against Leicester.
Every Liverpool supporter wants to see the 24-year-old play more, and Kelleher earned his time to shine last night by captaining the team against Leicester.
