According to sources speaking to Football Insider, Liverpool and Joel Matip’s representation are now in preliminary discussions regarding a potential contract extension.

It’s thought that the conversation is still in its early stages.

Matip, 32, is in the last year of his deal at Anfield and has until January to talk about a pre-contract deal with overseas teams.

Given that Liverpool was willing to move the center-back during the summer transfer window, a new contract for him would be unexpected.

He is now Jurgen Klopp’s fourth-choice center-back and is nearing the end of his career.

Klopp is eager to keep the Cameroon international around despite his advanced age because he believes in him.

This season, he has made four appearances, starting three of them in the Premier League because Virgil van Dijk was out with an injury.

The former Schalke player played in 21 games last season as Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League.

During his time on Merseyside, he has won the English Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 on a free transfer and has played 191 times for the club.
