Liverpool often gave up goals during the previous Premier League season, but in the summer transfer window, they made no purchases to strengthen the backline.

The Reds have only managed one clean sheet so far this season, and three times they have required their depth in the attacking third to come back from a goal down.

News: Liverpool and the Anfield star are likely to reach a deal worth £52 million.

The Merseysiders need to strengthen their defense, and Piero Hincapie’s name is once again in the spotlight.

Liverpool and Hincapie are in advanced negotiations to sign each other during the winter transfer season, claims Spanish source Fichajes.

According to the media, the Anfield club is taking decisive action in January to bolster the backline, and luring the Ecuadorian international might cost up to 55 million euros.

According to a trusted German source, Bild, the 21-year-old South American is valued at 70 million euros (£60.5 million) by Bayer Leverkusen and is a target for Jurgen Klopp.

Tomorrow will mark the start of both Liverpool’s and Leverkusen’s Europa League campaigns. Leverkusen, led by Reds icon Xabi Alonso, is presently leading the Bundesliga.

Hincapie was an integral part of the German team that finished the previous season in sixth place, but he was suspended for the first three games of the current season after receiving a straight red card on the final day of play.

Van Dijk, Konate, Matip, and Gomez currently make up Klopp’s central defense. Gomez and Konate have shown to be injury prone, while Virgil and Matip are past their prime.

Should Liverpool sign a new center back during the winter in such a situation? Should they spend the extra £60.5 million to sign Piero Hinacpie at last?
