In the first round of the 2024 draft, should Rams general manager Les Snead select a cornerback or an edge?

The most frequent first round selection for the Los Angeles Rams is Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean, according to NFL Mock Draft Database, which aggregates and averages all mock drafts and big boards. Even though a few of his basketball moments got somewhat viral recently, DeJean has a chance to be the top cornerback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

If the Rams decide to go defensive with their first pick, should they select him, another corner, or an edge rusher? That appears to be where most mock drafts split.

According to CBS Sports’ Kyle Stackpole, the Rams will choose Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse. Dan Parr of NFL.com selected UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu. Additionally, Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire reports that Dallas Turner of Alabama is down to 19 points for the Rams. Those three are the best three edge rushers in the class, and unless Ochaun Mathis or Nick Hampton have an unforeseen breakout season, L.A.’s defense will not have a star player to start opposite Byron Young in the upcoming year.

The Rams also need help at cornerback, particularly now that Ahkello Witherspoon is a free agency.

The Rams are reportedly selecting DeJean, a 6’1 2019 lb cornerback who may run a sub-4.4 40-yard sprint at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to Eddie Brown of the San Diego Union Tribune. Quinyon Mitchell of Toledo is another well-known name; Walter Football recently made fun of him to L.A.

Rakestraw are additional corners that are frequently or infrequently made fun of during the opening round.

Naturally, this does not completely rule out quarterbacks, offensive tackles, or any other position. There aren’t many first-round prospects among linebackers or safeties, and this year’s defensive tackle prospects, if any, don’t appear likely. Which cornerback or edge should the Rams play if they decide to go defense?

If that player is successful, they can’t go wrong with any of them.
