Pete Alonso, the Mets have not yet held negotiations for a long-term contract despite the impending free agency
On Saturday afternoon, Pete Alonso stated that he would be happy to be a Met for life; but, there have been no discussions between the two parties to really make that happen.
After participating in a live batting practice, Alonso told reporters in Port St. Lucie, Florida, that he and the Mets have not yet discussed a long-term contract.
Alonso stated that the main goal was to avoid arbitration, which he accomplished this summer by signing a one-year, $20.5 million contract.
“Definitely, we welcomed conversation,” Alonso told reporters about this offseason. “It’s just the only conversation we had was about the one-year deal.”
When asked if he wanted to play with the Mets in the long run, 29-year-old Alonso replied “yes,” but he also said he couldn’t predict everything.
“I definitely have envisioned myself being a lifelong Met, that’s something I’ve definitely thought about,” he said. “I love New York, it’s a really special place for my family and I. … I definitely welcome the idea, but I can’t predict the future. And for me, I just want to focus on this season.”
Alonso went on to say that he would be willing to discuss talks about a new contract throughout the season.
This season is full of unknowns for both Alonso and the Mets overall, as they concluded last season with 75 wins and traded away a significant portion of their roster, including expensive pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.
Alonso, who went 46 home runs in the previous season, stated he hadn’t given much regard to the prospect of getting transferred this year in the event that the Mets struggle in 2024 once more.
“That’s a lot to think about,” he said. “I just had my first live BP.”
