Pete Alonso’s future with the New York Mets is in doubt as he approaches his contract year. He did, however, give the organization some encouraging news regarding the possibility of negotiating a new agreement.

Alonso declared on Saturday that he would feel free to negotiate even during the regular season and would not impose an Opening Day deadline on contract negotiations. This is a rare move, as many players who are starting their contract years will avoid talking after Opening Day due to potential distractions.

Given that Alonso changed agency late last year, this is also a little out of the ordinary. He joined superagent Scott Boras, who is well-known for pushing his clients to free agency in an effort to secure the largest possible salary.

Regarding Alonso’s status with the Mets, there have been differing claims since his name surfaced in trade rumors the previous season. The last we heard, though, the Mets were working to keep him around for many years to come. That still seems to be the case, given that Alonso was neither traded during the winter nor did his name surface in many speculations.

Despite dropping to a.217 average the previous season, Alonso’s power did not go away as he blasted 46 home runs. It is quite likely that the 29-year-old will sign a large contract, whether it comes from the Mets or another team.
