Pete Alonso’s future with the New York Mets is undoubtedly the biggest question mark surrounding the team at the moment.
Will the young slugger spend the foreseeable future as a member of New York? Will the Mets eventually pass on giving him a big contract in favor of trading him? Really, it’s hard to predict what will occur.
As of right now, it looks like Alonso will play out the 2024 season under his current contract before testing free agency in the upcoming offseason. A trade wouldn’t probably occur until the trade deadline if the Mets don’t believe they can re-sign him.
Although Alonso has made all the right statements thus far, the Mets must cover his salary if they want him to stay in New York. While it’s unclear if they will, Jeff McNeil, a fellow All-Star, expressed his hope that they will on Foul Territory.
“I know he wants to be a Met, and we all want him to be a Met as well,” McNeil stated. “Since he is known to adore New York, maybe we can keep him for a long time. I would rather not see him perform elsewhere. I hope we can be teammates for a very long time.”
Alonso has emerged as one of baseball’s best sluggers and is undoubtedly becoming a fan favorite in New York. The Mets will soon have to make a difficult choice, but holding onto Alonso for the foreseeable future ought to be their first priority.
