Ohio State appeared firmly in control for most of the night, building a commanding 23–3 advantage over Texas. But what looked like a statement victory quickly turned into a heartbreaking collapse as the Longhorns stormed back in the fourth quarter.
Texas scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final period, with Arch Manning leading the comeback and Hollywood Smothers scoring the decisive touchdown with just 25 seconds remaining. The Longhorns completed one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent Ohio State history.
For Julian Sayin, the night was especially frustrating. The Buckeyes’ quarterback entered the matchup after throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns against Ball State and carried enormous expectations into Austin.
The biggest late-game talking point, however, may center on Ohio State’s decision-making rather than simply placing the blame on Sayin. With the Buckeyes protecting a narrow lead late, the offense struggled to generate the finishing drive it needed, leaving Texas with another opportunity to attack.
Ohio State even had a chance to extend its advantage when Connor Hawkins attempted a 45-yard field goal late in the game, but the kick missed. That gave Texas life, and Manning capitalized by directing the final scoring drive that put the Longhorns ahead.
The loss will sting for Buckeye Nation, especially after Ohio State controlled the game so thoroughly. But the season is far from over. The Buckeyes now have to regroup, learn from the collapse and respond when they return to Columbus. One painful night in Austin does not define the entire season.
