John Mateer’s name is beginning to generate renewed attention as the Oklahoma quarterback continues to attract interest from evaluators watching the early stages of the 2026 college football season. After entering the year with questions surrounding his consistency and development, Mateer has already provided NFL scouts with additional material to evaluate as they assess his potential at the next level.

 

The Oklahoma quarterback entered the 2026 season with considerable expectations after an eventful previous campaign. His first year with the Sooners included impressive moments, but it was also affected by a serious thumb injury and stretches of inconsistent quarterback play. Mateer has made it clear that he wanted to return this season looking more comfortable, more decisive and better prepared to handle the demands placed on him. The performance against UTEP was particularly notable because of what it represented for Mateer personally. After dealing with the difficulties of the previous season, he looked much more comfortable operating Oklahoma’s offense. Mateer completed 17 of 33 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown while throwing one interception. He also rushed for 45 yards and was sacked three times.

 

 

 

Although the Michigan game did not produce the same statistical numbers as the season opener, it gave professional evaluators another type of information. Quarterbacks preparing for the NFL are judged not only by their best performances but also by how they respond when opposing defenses successfully take away their preferred options. Michigan consistently pressured Mateer and forced Oklahoma to operate in difficult situations, providing valuable film for scouts studying his decision-making and ability to function under pressure.

 

Through Oklahoma’s first two games, Mateer has completed 28 of 50 attempts for 414 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He has also added 52 rushing yards. His early-season production gives NFL evaluators a relatively small but useful sample as they continue tracking his development.

 

What makes Mateer particularly interesting from an NFL perspective is the combination of his passing ability and mobility. His 2025 campaign was considerably more complicated. Mateer finished that season with 2,885 passing yards, 14 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions, while adding 431 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. A broken thumb on his throwing hand significantly affected his season, and he subsequently underwent surgery before returning to action. Mateer has since spoken about the lessons he took from that experience and his determination to return to his previous level.

 

That history makes his 2026 performances especially important. Scouts are not simply looking at his raw numbers; they are also watching how his game has evolved following the adversity of the previous season. Improvements in mechanics, decision-making, pocket awareness and consistency could have a significant impact on how professional teams view him as the draft process develops.

 

Mateer is already viewed as a legitimate NFL prospect. His draft eligibility is listed for 2027, giving him additional time to strengthen his case and potentially improve his standing with professional evaluators. PFF currently lists him among its 2026 college quarterbacks and has tracked his early-season passing and overall grades, illustrating the level of attention surrounding his play.
