According to a person familiar with the situation, Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio is being tested in the Dominican Republic for an injury he sustained during a game on Sunday.
He will probably come to New York to be evaluated by Mets physicians.
The source stated that it is a knee injury. It’s unclear how serious it is yet.
Mauricio, who was playing for Tigres del Licey on Sunday night, started to run from first base like he was going to steal, stopped, and fell to the ground.
In his 26 games as a Mets rookie last season, Mauricio hit.248 with two home runs and a.643 OPS. The promise and athleticism he demonstrated were not entirely reflected in those numbers. By season’s end, he was ranked as a future third baseman by the Mets’ departing leadership group, ahead of Brett Baty and Mark Vientos.
Michael Mayer of Metsmerized was the first person to post the video of Mauricio’s injury on social media.
