The Mets, who lost out on a top-six pick in Tuesday night’s draft lottery, will take the No. 19 overall pick in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
The Mets had the seventh-best odds (4.3%) to land the first overall pick going into the drawing, but their pick dropped ten spots because they were $40 million over the luxury tax threshold in 2023, the year they missed out on one of the first six selections.
The Yankees, who had a 0.6 percent chance of winning the lotto when they started, lost 10 slots and ended up with the No. 25 pick in the first round, much like the Mets.
In the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, the Mets selected high school shortstop Colin Houck with their first pick, 32nd overall rather than 22nd. This resulted in a drop of ten spots for the team.
Having entered the drawing with the ninth-best odds (2 percent) of snagging the first pick, the Cleveland Guardians emerged victorious. The Cincinnati Reds, who had the 13th-best odds going into the draft, end up with the second overall pick.
The Oakland A’s (4th overall), Colorado Rockies (3rd overall), and Kansas City Royals (6th overall) had equal-best odds of winning the lottery going into Tuesday night.
