Nov. 17: INF/OF Five other players tendered contracts, while Jake Cave, RHP Dylan Covey, and C Garrett Stubbs agreed to terms to avoid arbitration.
Before the 8 p.m. ET tender deadline, the Phillies reached an agreement with Cave, Covey, and Stubbs on one-year contracts. Infielder Alec Bohm, right-hander Jeff Hoffman, infielder Edmundo Sosa, left-hander Gregory Soto, and left-hander Ranger Suárez were among the five other players to whom they tendered contracts.
On November 6, the Phillies claimed left-hander Josh Fleming off waivers, but they did not offer him a contract.
Nov. 14: The Phillies trade INF Oliver Dunn to the Brewers in exchange for INF Robert Moore and OF Hendry Mendez.
Before Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET, the Phillies made a trade of one prospect for two to add players to the 40-man roster, shielding them from the Rule 5 Draft.
Dunn was sent to the Brewers in exchange for Mendez and Moore. MLB Pipeline has Moore ranked as the No. 25 prospect for the Phillies. Mendez will move up to the system’s No. 30 prospect spot.
Dunn, 26, recently received the Breakout Player of the Year award from the Arizona Fall League. The Phillies had no intention of adding him to the 40-man roster, but he was eligible for the Rule 5 Draft the following month. Dunn was traded for two younger players who do not yet require protection.
The 21-year-old Moore is the son of veteran baseball executive Dayton Moore. Moore, a Competitive Balance Round B selection in the 2022 Draft, batted.233 in 563 plate appearances with High-A Wisconsin, eight home runs, 62 RBIs, and a.682 OPS. At the Rookie and High-A levels, Mendez, 20, batted a combined.258 with three home runs, thirty RBIs, and a.679 OPS.
UPDATES ON INJURIES
RHP Andrew Painter (right elbow sprained UCL)
Return anticipated: 2025
On July 25, Painter underwent ulnar nerve transposition surgery along with Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedicist, carried out the operations. It usually takes 15 to 18 months to get back into the game.
The Phillies have announced that Painter will miss the entire 2024 season. In accordance with the advice of their physicians and ElAttrache, who collaborates closely with Painter’s agent Scott Boras, they initially attempted a conservative rehab procedure.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated, “I know we’ll be looking at [Painter] and thinking that he has a chance to be in our rotation at that time in 2025.” However, that is a long way off. (Recent update: November 3)
RHP Erich Uelmen (strained right flexor)
Return anticipated: 2024
Uelmen appeared in just one Phillies game this season. On September 19, he made his Triple-A Lehigh Valley debut. (Updated as of September 30.)
