Starting quarterback Daniel Jones and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor were both struck by injuries, so the New York Giants are starting their third-string quarterback. With a torn ACL, Jones will miss the entire season, while Taylor has been placed on short-term injured reserve to recover from a rib injury.

But Taylor’s injury isn’t thought to be a season-ending one, and he might return soon. Head coach Brian Daboll reports that Taylor is “making progress” in his recuperation.

When healthy, will Tyrod Taylor take over as the starting quarterback?

When he’s ready to go back into the lineup, Taylor will probably start at quarterback. Tommy DeVito, a third-string quarterback, started in Week 10 and is anticipated to start going forward, but having him in the starting lineup severely restricts the offense.

This season, the Giants were a competitive football team when Taylor was in the starting lineup. As the starter, Taylor went 1-2 (he left a close game early due to an injury in one of those two losses), but he managed to keep Big Blue in close games.

Throughout his seven games this season, Taylor has thrown for 579 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. With Taylor in the lineup, the offense was much more effective because of his efficiency behind the arch, which was bolstered by his 13 years of NFL experience.

Taylor will be able to start ahead of DeVito once he returns to health thanks to his experience and strong performances this season. Taylor won’t be added to the active roster until Week 13, when the Giants will have a bye week, as he was placed on injured reserve in Week 9. But a return in Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers is conceivable.

Does Taylor’s absence benefit the Giants more?

The team would not be better off without Taylor, unless you took the perspective of a fan hoping and praying to see their team lose enough games to land the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Taylor would unquestionably be an upgrade over DeVito when he returns to full strength.

The Giants’ chances of winning football games are significantly higher when Taylor is in the starting lineup. This will increase Daboll’s chances of surviving this difficult season and satisfy ownership.

On the other hand, the Giants’ chances of selecting first overall will decrease with increased wins and decreased losses. Some football fans may not care about draft selections; all that matters to them is seeing their team win. However, some people might support the “tanking” strategy because they’re afraid that Taylor might return to the lineup and help the Giants win games.
