Due to a muscular ailment, Man City player Matheus Nunes has withdrawn from Portugal’s squad for this international stint.
In the upcoming days, Roberto Martinez’s team will play Iceland and Liechtenstein in an attempt to wrap up their EURO 2024 qualifying group. The Portuguese have already won every game they have played, solidifying their position atop the group.
Martinez will be able to experiment a little during this international break, and Nunes was one player who was hoping to be involved, but the Man City star is sidelined due to an injury.
According to a statement issued by the Portuguese FA and attributed to Fabrizio Romano: “Matheus Nunes was declared clinically unfit for the two games vs Liechtenstein and Iceland after tests. The player will no longer travel to Zurich, it is late, with the rest of the national delegation”.
Nunez has played for his country eleven times, but he hasn’t been a regular in Portugal’s squad for the EURO 2024 tournament.
The midfield player joined Man City in the summer in the hopes of increasing his chances of being chosen for Portugal’s EURO 2024 squad. As a result, this setback will be devastating for the player, as he was probably going to play in the next two games.
Although this is not a huge setback for City, Guardiola will not be pleased with the loss of a player who is barely behind the starting 11 in his lineup.
