Manchester United and Liverpool are allegedly in the running to capture Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.

The Dutch international is reportedly currently on the Reds’ radar. Leading up to the January transfer window, several Premier League teams are keeping an eye on the talented right-back.

As per the report, Liverpool are joined by United and Chelsea in their pursuit for Dumfries who Inter could sell in 2024 for €40m (£34m) as they look to fund their Serie A title-push.

Due to Liverpool’s lack of a natural right-back to cover Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Anfield giants made a wise decision in January by signing Dumfries.

Given Dumfries’ extremely aggressive style of play and Inter’s asking price, there are, nevertheless, legitimate concerns about Liverpool’s motivations for pursuing the defender.

Dumfries might fit in the Premier League, after all. The Inter defender, though, may be the final option the Reds should consider given what Liverpool needs.

The kind of player Liverpool shouldn’t be signing is Dumfries.

Dumfries is unquestionably a talented player; he was among the Netherlands’ finest at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and a vital member of Inter’s winning team in the UEFA Champions League final run of the previous season.

But for what Liverpool need, Dumfries is an all-action fullback who drives at wingers and hugs the touchline like a winger; as for the right-back, he could not be much different from Alexander-Arnold.

The defender would undoubtedly be a chaotic force in the Premier League, but Liverpool needs a replacement for Alexander-Arnold who can provide the inventiveness the Reds lack when he’s not there.
