After the Netherlands’ 1-0 victory over Greece, Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, was astounded at the condition of the surface.

On Monday night, the 32-year-old qualified for the 2024 European Championships by making a calm penalty shot in stoppage time.

After Wout Weghorst’s first-half penalty was saved, the game became tense, and the Dutch left it late to secure their spot in the tournament the following summer.

After Denzel Dumfires was fouled in the penalty area, referee Alejandro Hernández awarded a penalty kick and later ejected Greece manager Gus Poyet for his on-field objections.

Van Dijk was not particularly impressed with the state of the surface during his post-game interview, despite his heroics.

“You’ve seen the pitch, right? awful,” he remarked. “It’s unbelievable that this is still allowed at this level.”

The Liverpool defender has spent the past week whining, most recently criticising the Premier League schedule makers for making players play too many games.

“In England we believe the schedules are too busy,” he stated. “Although the players receive good pay, it should never come at the expense of our health.

“We’re required to play an increasing number of games. We as participants should start speaking up and helping to find a solution.”

Van Dijk was asked if he would be willing to forfeit 10% of his income in exchange for playing fewer games, and he responded, “No.”

He went on: “I don’t think having to play less games depends on my salary?”
