Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, who are teammates at Liverpool, squared off last night in a South American World Cup qualifying match.

Ever since Darwin joined Lucho at Liverpool in the summer of 2022, the two players have gotten close. But last night, when Colombia played Uruguay for three points, they were at war.

Nunez ultimately supplied the crucial play of the game. In the last seconds of regulation, Colombia led 2-1, but the Reds striker scored a beautiful penalty to level the match.

It was a hard-fought match between two excellent teams, as they frequently are on these occasions. Nunez and Diaz reestablished their friendship after the whistle had been blown. The two Reds were seen coming together at full-time.

Liverpool’s numbers 9 and 7 crossed paths on the pitch, swapped shirts and hugged each other. Nunez gave Diaz a reassuring slap on the back of the head as they parted ways, Diaz looked a little dejected.

Nunez and Diaz are re-friends.

This specific game was won by Nunez, as has been the case frequently this season.

It was a beautiful penalty from Uruguay’s striker, giving them a point that was worth more than Colombia’s.

Nunez’s team has four points after three games, good for fourth position in qualification, while Colombia one place ahead with five points.

For Diaz, it was yet another game without a goal and one in which he was unable to significantly impact the outcome.

The 26-year-old was advised to relieve himself of the burden of having to score in every game before to the contest. However, he does seem to be a little burdened by that expectation, which Diaz may place on himself.

But there’s always the following game. Next Wednesday, Colombia will play Ecuador in Quito, while Uruguay will play Brazil in a rematch.

Now that this one is finished, these two can resume their roles as Liverpool teammates. Good job, guys.
