Joe Gomez, a defender for Liverpool, has recently been on fire while playing for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Joe Gomez has stated that before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2015, he was on the verge of signing with RB Leipzig.

In order to complete the transfer, the Reds outbid several other clubs and paid Charlton Athletic £3.5 million to get the English defender.

Gomez has now played a significant part in some of the club’s greatest successes in recent years, most notably in the title-winning 2019–20 season when he formed a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

The 26-year-old’s situation might have been different, though, had he not already disclosed that he had a Leipzig offer to consider in the months prior to moving to Liverpool.

The center-back admitted to visiting Red Bull Leipzig in January of 2015 on a podcast for Total Media. “They were still in the Bundesliga 2, and I had barely played half a season. They are a fantastic club, but I wasn’t prepared when they joined. My dad and my missus weren’t feeling it, and I went with my mother. I was aware that I wasn’t prepared, yet the chance arose.

Gomez considered his options after passing up this chance, and teams continued to show interest over the summer. The Englishman, who had a favourable impression of the team after meeting with Brendan Rodgers, naturally chose Anfield as his next stop.

“The three primary options in the summer were Liverpool, Bournemouth, and Villa, according to the 2019 Champions League victor. It was a significant choice at the time, and Bournemouth had Eddie Howe, a terrific gaffer, so they are basically contrasting roots. After meeting Brendan, I developed a special heart for Liverpool. It had warmth to it as a club. Brendan was a likeable man when I first met him.”
