The finest opponent Trent Alexander-Arnold has ever faced who “never made it” to the top has been discussed in detail.
Despite having a strong start to the Premier League season, Liverpool was defeated 2-1 by Tottenham owing to a Joel Matip own goal in stoppage time.
A mistake with VAR and referee Simon Hooper led to the Reds’ score being wrongly disallowed for offside, adding salt to injury.
Liverpool had a chance to win against Brighton, but instead drew 2-2 after dominating for more than 30 minutes before to Lewis Dunk’s equaliser.
Since then, Alexander-Arnold has sat down with Liverpool’s YouTube page to talk about a variety of subjects, including his favourite away stadium and the one moment from his time at Liverpool that he would like to relive.
The finest player the 25-year-old had ever faced but who “never made it” to the top was also a question that was posed to him.
Alexander-Arnold responded after a prolonged pause:
“I would say Brandon Barker, played for [Manchester] City.”
“I was 18, playing for the Under-21s, first ever time at Anfield, got beat 3-0. He scored two and got an assist. I came off at 60
“Still to this day, he’s the opponent I think that just destroyed me, man. I’ve never had it like that before.
“At that point I’m thinking: ‘this kid is going to be the best player in the world’ because I’d never seen someone move so quickly and sharp and effectively, so I’d say Brandon Barker.”
Barker failed to make the City first team and was loaned to Preston North End, Hibernian, Rotherham, and Breda in the Netherlands before deciding to accept a permanent contract with Rangers in 2019.
The Englishman joined Reading as a free agent after a more fruitful loan with Oxford United, but he only made four appearances there before accepting a fresh challenge in Cyprus with Omonia.
