An encouraging report on the health of injured forward Cody Gakpo was provided by Jurgen Klopp.
Prior to being pulled off the pitch against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend due to injury, Gakpo was in excellent shape. Even if the Dutchman was absent for yesterday’s victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, it appears he will return very soon.
In his preparation of the Brighton game on Sunday, Klopp noted that Gakpo appeared to have averted a serious injury and should be available again following the break for international play.
“Cody has a good chance that he will be back [after the break],” said the manager. “Already out of the brace, walks normal around here.
“So from all the very, very bad opportunities and possibilities injury-wise, we nearly got the best, but he is still injured.”
Gakpo will soon be ready to return.
Cody won’t be playing on Sunday, but it looks like he’ll be back for Liverpool’s first encounter following the break.
For those who don’t know, that’s a Merseyside Derby at Anfield. Gakpo will undoubtedly be motivated to get healthy after scoring his first goal for Liverpool in this match last season.
He would be useful to the Reds as well. The 24-year-old has three goals in his last three Liverpool starts after a sluggish start to the season.
Gakpo has scored five times in his past five starts if you including his goals while on the road with the Netherlands in September. That’s great progress.
The former captain of PSV may not have the same dynamic play as Darwin Nunez or the same unrelenting production as Mohamed Salah, but he still brings something special to Liverpool.
I’m hoping he keeps it up throughout the international break so we can see him at the derby.
Thiago Alcantara is one individual who most likely won’t be seen for a little while. The Spaniard has experienced yet another setback with his injury, according to Klopp. How annoying!
