According to James Maddison, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota received well-deserved red cards from referee Simon Hooper.

On Saturday, Tottenham scored another late game-winning goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, energising the home crowd.

Spurs are still unbeaten in the Premier League after their 2-1 victory over Liverpool, and they are currently only one point behind league-leading Manchester City.

Naturally, there has been a lot of discussion and writing about some of the contentious calls made by the referee during the game.

PMGOL recognised that ‘a substantial human error’ caused the first-half goal by Luis Diaz to be incorrectly determined to be offside.

According to some commentators, including Gary Neville, Jones did not deserve to be sent off because his foot slid on the ball before he made contact with Yves Bissouma (Sky Sports via Mirror).

Against Tottenham, did Liverpool deserve to receive two red cards?

Maddison asserted that Jones and Joto were appropriately given their marching orders after seeing both red card occurrences on a large screen.

Jota’s was, the Tottenham midfielder told Sky Sports (airing on September 30 at 17:00), “Jota’s definitely was. The Curtis Jones one early on got shown on the big screen I think was a red card as well. I’m not sure Jurgen will complain too much about those too.”

As it turned out, Klopp did criticise both red cards, claiming Jones didn’t mean to hurt Bissouma and Jota barely touched Udogie to warrant his first caution (ESPN).

Tottenham Web Opinion

I can see why Liverpool supporters are furious because Jota’s first caution seemed to be too lenient. Though it is important to note that the winger avoided receiving a possible yellow card only moments before, the official was bound to give him a booking the following time he fouled a player to halt a Spurs assault.
