Chelsea and Tottenham will have less games to worry about in the 2023–24 season because they both failed to qualify for European football last year.
The lack of European competition for Chelsea and Tottenham this season, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, is a “massive advantage” over those Premier League rivals vying for a top-four finish. Last season, the Reds won a spot in the Europa League while the Blues and Spurs ended outside of the Premier League’s slots for European qualification.
Despite not playing in Europe, Chelsea and Tottenham have made significant summer signings to bolster their squads. Ange Postecoglou’s team is still unblemished after six games, but Mauricio Pochettino has had trouble getting strong wins so far this season.
Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, and Wesley Fofana are just a few of the important players that have sustained injuries recently, which has hurt the Blues. The most recent player to experience a serious injury is Ben Chilwell, who will be sidelined until the end of October.
Klopp believes that Pochettino’s club, together with Spurs, have a significant advantage in the battle for the top four this season despite Chelsea’s issues both on and off the field. In advance of Liverpool’s encounter against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon, Klopp stated on Friday that “Chelsea and Tottenham have no European football.”
“Two heavyweights who don’t play in European football have the entire week to train while other people go on vacation. It’s a significant benefit.
“The Liverpool manager continued, “Getting into the Champions League this year will be a tremendous, difficult feat because they will be well rested.” However, having fewer games to play might occasionally be bad for teams because it may cause players to lose their rhythm and confidence due to a longer break period.
