According to Reds blogger and analyst Neil Jones, Liverpool has long admired West Ham United attacker Jarrod Bowen.
Jones said in his special column for the Daily Briefing that even if a deal for Bowen to replace Mohamed Salah made sense, it might be the case that because to the player’s advanced age, that particular ship has gone.
Jones acknowledges that Bowen is a good player who certainly has what it takes to play for a bigger club and that at some point, a similar move for the England international may take place.
At one point, Bowen was a legitimate target for Liverpool as well. The left-footed forward, who prefers to play from the right wing, appeared to be a capable like-for-like substitute for Salah, if not technically.
At the weekend, Bowen scored against Liverpool, which prompted Jones to talk about the player and his prior connections to LFC.
Jones noted in this week’s Daily Briefing column that “Jarrod Bowen impressed with a goal for West Ham against Liverpool at the weekend, and he is a player Liverpool admire, and have done for some time.”
“He was specifically considered as a prospective signing a couple of years ago, and of course as a left-footer who plays on the right, scores and produces at a respectable rate, he’s definitely a choice worth taking into account given the concerns about Mo Salah’s long-term future.
“But even though he won’t be old at all—he’ll be 27 in January—I would anticipate the Reds to be looking for guys a little younger, with a little more promise and longevity at the highest level.
“When they moved to Anfield, all of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Salah, and Sadio Mane were 25 or younger, and I would anticipate that approach to continue moving forward.
“Bowen is a fine player, and he may very well have a move to a top-six club in him, but I suspect the ship has sailed as far as Liverpool are concerned.”
