Prior to Saturday’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur, vice captain Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool has resumed full training, according to assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders via Liverpoolfc.com.
Alexander-Arnold has accelerated his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury sustained against Aston Villa a few weeks ago, but he is not anticipated to play in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City tonight evening.
The 24-year-old has been a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s team ever since he made his debut in a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round in 2016.
He has played for the Merseysiders in four league games and has contributed one assist as they currently sit in second place in the Premier League standings with 16 points, only two points behind Manchester City.
Alexander-Arnold trained with his teammates on Monday, according to Lijnders, who revealed this information during a pre-game news conference prior to the Leicester game. He might get a chance to play against the Spurs this coming weekend.
“Trent trained yesterday with us but it was just in the rondo and the ball possession with the counter-pressing, but he was outstanding” Lijnders said as quoted by Liverpoolfc.com.
“You see him instantly, of course. He is with the team training, I am not sure if he will be ready, we will see today.”
Another injury boost
Another injury good news for Liverpool supporters was Thiago Alcantara’s return to full fitness following several weeks on the sidelines.
The 32-year-old, who has yet to play this year, last appeared for the Reds in a 2-1 triumph at West Ham in April. In all competitions last season, he made 28 appearances and contributed one goal.
According to Lijnders, Thiago is doing well and is in a “good way” with his recovery:
“He is in a good way, the healing process is going well so that’s the most important [thing] at this moment,” Lijnders added.
Ever since he transferred from Bayern Munich to Anfield in 2020, Alcantara has struggled with injuries. In his first season, he assisted Liverpool in qualifying for the Champions League despite several important players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, had long-term injuries.
In the 2021–2022 campaign, the Spain international assisted the Reds in mounting a historic quadruple assault as Klopp’s team came close to winning the Premier League and Champions League but fell to Man City and Real Madrid, respectively.
In the end, Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties to win the Carabao Cup and the Emirates FA Cup.
