A report circulating online claims that East Carolina quarterback Mitch Griffis has received a $5,000 fine from the NCAA following alleged remarks made after the Pirates’ difficult loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Griffis entered the matchup as ECU’s starting quarterback after head coach Blake Harrell selected the veteran transfer during the preseason competition. The sixth-year quarterback had previously played at Wake Forest and Texas Tech before joining the Pirates in 2026.
The Pirates faced a major challenge against No. 13 Alabama in Tuscaloosa and ultimately suffered a 48–10 defeat. The result made for a difficult opening chapter to Griffis’ tenure as ECU’s starting quarterback.
According to the unverified claim, private comments allegedly made by Griffis after the game were accidentally captured through opposing quarterback Keelon Russell’s live headset microphone. The claim further alleges that Russell reported the audio after becoming aware of what had been recorded.
