In addition to losing a number of midfielders to expired contracts, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho later decided to play in the Saudi Pro League.

In the end, Liverpool added four new midfielders, and everything turned out nicely, as the Reds are now second in the Premier League standings.

The Daily Mail now claims that Jurgen Klopp’s team was just 24 hours away from signing a player who was considered to be “the World Cup’s best midfielder.”

Sofyan Amrabat, a Moroccan player, was frequently mentioned in connection with Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old was reportedly personally phoned by Klopp in an effort to get him to sign for Liverpool, according to the Mail.

According to the story in United Confidential, the issue started within the Amrabat camp after talks were supposedly suspended for 24 hours.

During this time, Liverpool made the decision to revert to Gravenberch, who at 21 was thought to be younger and more suitable for Klopp’s requirements.

Gravenberch eventually signed with the Reds for a reported £34.2 million, while Amrabat joined Manchester United on loan with a $21.4 million buyout option.

In TBR opinion

The Gravenberch result will definitely please a lot of Liverpool supporters. He did cost an additional £13 million, but he is still young and has a lot of promise.

For the Reds, Amrabat wouldn’t have been a bad choice. He has established himself for club and country, and he is in his prime.

Amrabat led Morocco to the World Cup semifinals in December and assisted Fiorentina in advancing to the Europa Conference League final.

He was in fact referred to as the “World Cup’s best midfielder” by Football Transfers, and there was undoubtedly justification for it.

When Liverpool and Manchester United square off against each other, first in December and again in April, it will be intriguing to observe how the two midfielders perform.
