Bruno Guimaraes signs a new contract with Newcastle United, causing Liverpool to miss out on yet another midfield target.
During the summer transfer window, Liverpool was rumored to be considering a number of European midfielders. Even if the team has added a number of top-notch midfielders, it looks that one of their known targets is no longer a realistic prospect for the future.
Bruno Guimaraes, a target for the Reds, has been in talks with Newcastle United about extending his contract since the later part of the 2022–2023 season and has finally decided to continue with the team until June 2028.
The Brazilian midfielder originally agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract that was supposed to end in June 2026 when he transferred from Lyon to Newcastle in January 2022 for a transfer price of £40 million. Fabrizio Romano, a transfer analyst, claims that the Magpies and the 25-year-old have agreed to a new contract with a £100 million release clause.
Even though Guimaraes has said he wants to keep playing for Newcastle, he has shown some anger at the ongoing contract talks that were delayed over the preseason.
The South American player has had a major influence since joining Eddie Howe’s team, scoring 10 goals in 63 games and being a key component in the team’s past season’s Champions League qualifying.
Since Newcastle has such high financial demands and is now playing in the Champions League, which means they’ll be able to compete at the top of the league for some time, it never seemed like a plausible transfer for Liverpool.
The fact that Howe’s club is playing in the top division of the European competition for the first time could cause a decline in their domestic performance and provide opportunities for some of their key players to leave.
It seems sense that sporting director Jorg Schmadtke would have viewed Guimaraes as a key target in our midfield rebuilding efforts this summer since he is unquestionably one of those elite athletes.
Now, it seems as though our chances of acquiring the former Lyon midfielder are minimal unless Klopp’s team is willing to spend a sizable cash on the deal, should they genuinely believe he is made for the team.
Our midfield options appear to be well-stocked in light of our recent additions of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch as well as the talents already on our roster.
