Since Liverpool reconstructed its midfield over the summer, it appears that the Reds’ upcoming hiring drive may need to focus on the defense.

The Anfield team is still scoring goals, therefore it appears that additional defensive reinforcements are required.

Joel Matip is one player who might leave at the end of the current campaign. The international player from Cameroon is in the last year of his contract, therefore it’s unlikely that he would stay with the team after this one.

As he discussed Matip’s likely departure on the Aldo Meets Podcast, Steve Nicol praised the defender for his years of service to Liverpool, saying the team got more out of him than they ever anticipated.

Better than anticipated Matip

Nicol praised the defender highly.

The co-host of Nicol remarked, “Matip will leave next summer, as he is currently in the final year of his contract.”

That’s okay, we got more out of him than we ever imagined we would, without a doubt,” Nicol added.

Amazing signing.

Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer a long time ago, but looking back, it has to be claimed that Matip was one of the better additions of this time period.

In the 2021–2022 season, the defender was maybe the Reds’ best defender ahead of Virgil van Dijk because of how good he has been when he has been able to stay healthy.

He hasn’t been a truly world-class defense, sadly, but as Nicol points out, he’s been much better than many Liverpool fans ever believed he could be.

Certainly, the defender making £100,000 a week will be remembered as a Liverpool legend.
