This season, Liverpool hopes to sign its top players to long-term deals at Anfield.
Right-back for Liverpool if he signs a new contract, Trent Alexander-Arnold may have already decided where he will play in the future, according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who told GIVEMESPORT where the player has his sights set.
In order to achieve his long-term goals, Jurgen Klopp wants to maintain his finest players on the Reds team.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract news for Liverpool
Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool are nearing agreement on terms for a new contract at Anfield, according to 90min. With confirmation likely before Christmas, the vice-captain may sign a long-term contract with the Reds, keeping the academy product at the club for the foreseeable future. After playing more than 250 games for his hometown team, the right-back rose to become one of the biggest earners for the organization.
Alexander-Arnold’s most recent contract extension was in 2021, but new terms could guarantee that he earns about £250,000 per week, solidifying his position as one of the world’s top full-backs. The 24-year-old’s Chelsea teammate Reece James and Real Madrid, according to the same report, are also interested in him.
It’s unlikely that either Three Lions right-back would sign with a La Liga behemoth in the upcoming 12 months, though, as the latter has already committed his future to the Stamford Bridge team. Additionally, Jones has stated to GIVEMESPORT that Liverpool must “do everything they can” to clinch Alexander-Arnold’s long-term commitment.
The full-back has been recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the Reds’ 3-0 Premier League victory against Aston Villa earlier this month. He was forced to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s England team for the September internationals as a result, and he missed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 3-1 triumph last Saturday. In a press conference prior to Thursday’s opening matchup against LASK Linz in the Europa League, Klopp stated (via Liverpool.com):
“He didn’t train with the team once yet and will take a little bit. It is not the worst hamstring injury you can have, but it’s a hamstring injury, and they barely heal in two weeks — and this one didn’t, either.”
The campaign’s European premiere might appear unlikely and dangerous. Alexander-Arnold may therefore set his sights on West Ham United’s Premier League matchup at Anfield on Sunday.
What has Jones stated regarding Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool?
Jones suggests that Alexander-Arnold might decide to stay with Liverpool and just play for that team until Barcelona or Real Madrid later aroused his interest. The reporter stated to GIVEMESPORT:
“I think we’re getting towards a case now where Alexander-Arnold doesn’t ever play for another club. I think that this could be him now. I don’t see where Alexander-Arnold would have the desire to move on to unless someone like Barcelona or Real Madrid were to come in for him. Where would Alexander-Arnold’s motivation come from to leave Liverpool? There’s not much better to be a one-club man. I think that that’s probably now where his sights will be set.”
What statements has Alexander-Arnold made regarding his position at Liverpool?
Alexander-Arnold needed a boost toward the close of the previous campaign to improve his play. Just that was done by manager Klopp, who moved the full-back into a midfield position when Liverpool had the ball and then put him back in his normal defensive position when they were down. The England international benefited greatly from it, as his form mirrored his contributions to the club’s title-winning season in 2019–20. Alexander-Arnold stated to The Independent:
“Nothing changed for me throughout the whole season mentality-wise. You keep working. I just wanted to be the best player on the pitch, and that never changed – but toward the end of the season, I felt I had my powers back, being able to do it consistently.
“It wasn’t weeks of planning. It was more information-based rather than practice on the pitch. The coaches trust me to fulfil my role when I do have a change. This was probably the biggest one so far, but I asked a lot of questions, and we were able to make it work – it’s just a lot of information, learning how to make it work, and everybody bought into that.
“Most enjoyable is the freedom to drift, get on the ball and make things happen. That comes with challenges too. You have to be disciplined and stick to a game plan. There are pros and cons. It’s freedom but with a lot of responsibility to control the game.”
What is next for Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool?
After playing LASK on Thursday to open the Europa League, the Reds will host Leicester City at Anfield in the Carabao Cup third round before West Ham visits on Sunday. The following weekend, the Merseyside team travels to north London to play Tottenham Hotspur, who are presently tied with Klopp’s team in the standings.
Prior to traveling to Brighton & Hove Albion for their final match before the second international break of the current campaign, Liverpool plays Union Saint-Gilloise in their second Europa League group stage match.
