Trent Alexander-Arnold’s possible new contract is allegedly going well for Liverpool, and they have a target date in mind for when they aim to close the deal.

The 24-year-old is reportedly in position to receive new terms that will pay him £250,000 per week, an almost 40% rise from his existing weekly salary of £180,000 (Capology).

According to reports, negotiations are going smoothly, and the club is hoping to close the transfer before Christmas despite ‘strong interest’ from LaLiga heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Trent’s current deal is set to expire in 2025, but he is allegedly prepared to sign new terms that would give him a further two years at Anfield.

The England international, who made his professional Liverpool debut over seven years ago, is one of Jurgen Klopp’s team’s longest-serving players with 277 games as of a month before his 25th birthday (Transfermarkt).

The manager clearly views Trent as one of his most trusted lieutenants as evidenced by the manager appointing him vice-captain over the summer when both James Milner and Jordan Henderson left the team.

The 24-year-old has faced some criticism lately and is prone to defensive slip-ups, but what he brings the squad in terms of attacking and creativity is almost unmatched. The best example of the latter quality is his commanding performance against Aston Villa two weeks ago.

Since several of Liverpool’s major players are now in their 30s and the club lost two of its important leaders during the summer, Trent’s impact will be even more significant as he moves into his prime.

It’s only fair that the Reds have increased his pay to the point where, all things being equal (Capology), he’d be the second-highest earner at Anfield. Ideally, the specifics of the new contract can be worked out soon so that a key player will be committed to the team until at least 2027.
