On Wednesday, the New York Mets selected veteran left-hander Jose Quintana to start for them on Opening Day.
The Mets take on the Milwaukee Brewers at home on March 28 to kick off the season. The Brewers selected Freddy Peralta to start.
Quintana, 35, has made three starts this spring and is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA. He made 13 starts last season and was 3-6 with a 3.57 ERA. His ribs suffered a stress fracture, forcing him to miss half the season.
Quintana will receive his second Opening Day nod in his career. In 2017, he started the Chicago White Sox season. Since Jon Niese in 2013, he is the first lefty to pitch on Opening Day for the Mets.
Quintana has 328 career appearances (302 starts) and a 3.74 ERA with seven different organizations, including the White Sox from 2012 to 2017.
With a moderate posterior capsule strain in his throwing shoulder, Kodai Senga, the No. 1 starter for the Mets, is out of commission and will probably start the season on the disabled list.
