Even though the New York Mets haven’t played their first spring training games yet, they will probably be without their best starting pitcher for a long time.
Kodai Senga is expected to begin the season on the disabled list due to a “moderate right posterior capsule strain,” according to President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, who made this announcement to reporters on Thursday in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Even though the Mets strengthened their rotation this offseason, it will be difficult to adjust to losing their top starter. Will that mean bringing someone in from the outside?
“I don’t think so,” Stearns said. We’re always going to be opportunistic and hear what’s out there. But I don’t think it really changes the thought process.”
In addition to mentioning “plenty of options,” Stearns acknowledged that Tylor Megill, José Butto, and Joey Lucchesi are among his top choices.
The current lineup of the Mets consists of Adrian Houser, Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Megill.
However, there are still a number of unsigned pitchers in the organization, starting with lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, if the Mets choose to go outside of it. Brad Keller, Domingo Germán, Matthew Boyd, Noah Syndergaard, Zack Greinke, Michael Lorenzen, and Mike Clevinger are also available.
