Right-hander Kodai Senga of the New York Mets felt minor arm soreness following a side practice during spring training.
The trainers for the Mets were examining Senga, according to manager Carlos Mendoza on Wednesday. At that moment, Mendoza wasn’t sure if the Japanese pitcher would receive an MRI or not.
“We’ll see. We’ve got to get with the trainers because that was late, obviously,” Mendoza told reporters in Port St. Lucie, Florida. “I’ve got to get more information. But he got on the mound yesterday and today he came in and just overall arm fatigue.”
Senga had a strong rookie season, so New York is counting on him to help anchor its rotation. In the offseason, the Mets also signed left-hander Sean Manaea and right-hander Luis Severino. In December, they traded right-hander Adrian Houser to Milwaukee.
In December 2022, the 31-year-old Senga agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract with New York. He made 29 starts last year and finished 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA.
The Mets, who had a 75-87 record in 2023 and finished fourth in the NL East, are looking to bounce back. Mendoza was hired in November, while David Stearns became the new president of baseball operations in September.
