The New York Mets have officially announced that big-time player Luke Voit will return.
Voit received an invitation to big-league spring training along with a minor league contract agreement from the Mets on Monday.
Voit showed up at Clover Park, the Mets’ spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, on Monday, just before the team revealed his contract.
Voit played with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse for a portion of the 2023 season, demonstrating his continued power with a 1.058 OPS, 14 home runs, and 35 RBIs in just 37 games.
He chose to opt out of his contract in early August, though, since the Mets did not call him up to the majors. Voit played in 22 games for the major-league Milwaukee Brewers at the end of the season, but he struggled there, finishing with a.221/.284/.265 slash line, a.549 OPS, and zero home runs.
Although Voit’s performance in the major leagues last season was unimpressive, his play in Triple-A with the Syracuse Mets gave some hope that he might be able to contribute in the DH position if Mark Vientos struggles this season.
If Voit doesn’t make the Mets out of camp, he’ll have to continue where he left off in the minor leagues. Only time will tell if he can find his major league form again.
