SP David Stearns, the new general manager of the Mets, has not been deterred by Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s choice to sign with the Dodgers.

After a wildly dismal season, the New York Mets traded for both Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer during the 2023 MLB season. Though it wasn’t meant to be, many observers thought Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s signing by New York was a sensible offseason move. Yamamoto’s rejection of his team, though, doesn’t deter new Mets general manager David Stearns.

“Look, we gave it our best shot and I think as an organization did pretty much everything we could. I thought it was a good process, a fair process, and ultimately the player chose to go to LA, which we respect,” Stearns said on Foul Territory.“Look, we gave it our best shot and I think as an organization did pretty much everything we could. I thought it was a good process, a fair process, and ultimately the player chose to go to LA, which we respect,” Stearns said on Foul Territory.

In free agency, Yamamoto signed a huge $325 million, 12-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even though Stearns lost out on the desired right-hander, he swore he would sign high-profile free agents in the future.
“We’re gonna go through these types of pursuits in the future, and there’s gonna be times when we land the player. And that will certainly be exciting for us.”
Stearns acclimating to his Mets role

Despite the fact that Stearns joined the Mets as general manager shortly after the 2023 season concluded, he admitted he had a good amount of familiarity with Yamamoto already. In addition, the group had prepared a lot of groundwork to support Stearns during the courtship.
