Unsigned musical group ‘RED & GOLD’ by Gathering of Strangers is a staple of 49ers home games; the club will play in the Super Bowl on February 11.
A rock-pop group with strong Scunthorpe ties has expressed their surprise that hundreds of millions of people watching the Super Bowl next weekend may hear their tune.
Due to the fact that the San Francisco 49ers play American football and have the nickname “The Red and Gold,” the unsigned band Gathering of Strangers—whose two guitarists, Tom Wingate and Andre Ilkiw, were born and raised in Scunthorpe—decided to get in touch with the team to promote their song “RED & GOLD.”
Remarkably, the 49ers from San Francisco responded to the band and shared how much they loved the song. In fact, the song has become a mainstay at the team’s home games at California’s Levi’s Stadium, drawing crowds of up to 70,000 fans.
The band claimed that their song felt “out of this world” when they learned their team had won the renowned Super Bowl, which attracted over 100 million people worldwide the previous year.
“It’s a very surreal feeling that still doesn’t feel quite real,” they remarked in an interview with Scunthorpe Live. The concept that it may be played during the Super Bowl is really unbelievable, especially considering that 70,000 people have been listening to it at Levi’s Stadium every week.
“Never in our wildest dreams would we think something like this would happen to us. All it takes it that one person to take a chance with you and luckily for us it was an incredible NFL team.
“The San Francisco 49ers have been incredibly supportive of our song RED & GOLD and the band. Receiving fans from across the pond is incredible to see. The UK 49ers Faithful group has also been amazingly supportive as they use it now across all their social media and YouTube.
