With regard to first baseman Pete Alonso, the New York Mets must make a significant choice. Maybe MLB Network’s rankings will make the Mets reconsider their plans if they are considering life without Alonso.
Alonso was ranked sixth in the “Top 10 Right Now” that the network unveiled on Thursday for the role.
Is it the right rating for a sixth-year professional? Sure, it’s intriguing.
Alonso made his debut for the Mets in 2019 and was selected for the All-Star Game after leading all of baseball in home runs (53), RBIs (120), and batting.260. In addition to winning National League Rookie of the Year, he came in seventh place in the vote for NL Most Valuable Player.
Since then, he has kept up his production. He has participated in two additional All-Star Games, won the Home Run Derby twice, and been among the top 10 vote-getters for the National League MVP award one more.
With 131 RBI, he also topped the Majors in RBI in 2022. He is cutting for his career. With 498 RBI, 192 home runs, 111 doubles, seven triples, and a.528/.870 slugging percentage.
This is when things become tough for Alonso and the Mets. He’s about to start his last season leading the team. In order to avoid salary arbitration, he and the Mets reached a $22 million, one-year agreement earlier this month. However, concerns remain over Alonso’s long-term prospects. The Mets may try to sign him after the season, trade him, or work out a long-term agreement with him.
Scott Boras is Alonso’s agent, so if the Mets don’t pay up, Alonso probably will test the market.
