Pete Alonso and the New York Mets reached a $20.5 million, one-year contract agreement on Thursday, avoiding salary arbitration.
The deal was reached on a Major League Baseball deadline day when teams and players eligible for arbitration exchanged formal bids for 2024 salaries.
Last season, Alonso, who was paid $14.5 million, batted.217 with 46 home runs, 118 RBIs, and an.821 OPS. In 2022, the first baseman tied for the big league lead with 131 RBIs after hitting.271 with 40 home runs and an.869 OPS.
After the upcoming season, the three-time All-Star and 2019 NL Rookie of the Year, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, can become a free agent.
Additionally, New York reached one-year agreements with reliever Drew Smith ($2,225,000), outfielder Tyrone Taylor ($2,025,000), right-hander Adrian Houser ($5.05 million), and left-handers David Peterson ($2.15 million) and Joey Lucchesi ($1.65 million).
In a trade with Milwaukee last month, Houser and Taylor were obtained.
Relief pitcher with the right hand The lone player from the Mets to trade arbitration figures with the team was Phil Bickford. The Mets made an offer of $815,000, but he demanded $900,000.
Before a hearing, Bickford is still able to work out an agreement with the team. In Scottsdale, Arizona, hearings before three-person panels will be arranged for eligible players who have not signed contracts between January 29 and February 16.
