The Mets 2024 offseason has been quite different from the previous two years’ experiences that blue and orange supporters have grown accustomed to.
The Mets have gradually assembled a team that has a realistic chance of making the playoffs next season, even though new President of Baseball Operations David Stearns hasn’t made a major splash yet.
The orange and blue are reportedly connected to one of the best arms on the market, but they are still in need of assistance with their bullpen.
John Brebbia is of interest to the Mets.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets have expressed interest in right-handed reliever John Brebbia, a free agent.
A look at Brebbia’s baseball journey so far
When Brebbia was chosen by the New York Yankees 929th overall in the Major League Baseball Draft in 2011, his major league career officially began. He bounced around a few organizations before making his major league debut on May 28, 2017, with the St. Louis Cardinals.
After pitching 51.2 innings in 50 appearances, the native of Massachusetts finished his rookie season with a 2.44 ERA, 0.929 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts.
The right-hander’s sophomore season saw a regression as he pitched 50.2 innings in 45 appearances, recording a 3.20 ERA, 1.164 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts.
In 2019, Brebbia assumed a far more prominent role, pitching 72.2 innings in 66 games with a 1.183 WHIP, 3.59 ERA, and 87 strikeouts.
The native of Massachusetts will be playing his final season with the Cardinals in 2019. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and was not granted a contract after the season.
After agreeing to a one-year deal, Brebbia played in just 18 games for the San Francisco Giants in 2021 before becoming a star in 2022.
The native of Massachusetts pitched 68 innings at a 3.18 ERA, 1.309 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts in 76 games, which was a league-high.
With a lat injury, the 33-year-old found it difficult to stay healthy in 2023. Despite playing in 40 games, he pitched 38.1 innings at a 3.93 ERA, 1.174 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts.
Brebbia was released by the team after the campaign.
