It is time to crown Patrick Mahomes as the king of comebacks. The star player for the Kansas City Chiefs has the stats to support that moniker.
Mahomes and the Chiefs were behind by ten scores in the second quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl 58. They were behind seven points at halftime (10–3), and it looked like the San Francisco 49ers would win the game.
But the Chiefs would not be denied back-to-back Super Bowl victories, as Mahomes led a furious rally against the 49ers in the second half to force overtime. Following a field goal made by Brock Purdy and Co. during their offensive possession in overtime, Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman helped Kansas City win 25–22.
Mahomes’ postseason record in playoff games where he is losing by at least seven points has increased to 9-2 after the amazing comeback victory. According to X user Dedication Hoops, no other quarterback has a winning record in this kind of situation since 1950.
That’s undoubtedly a really amazing statistic that illustrates Mahomes’ remarkable physical and mental toughness. There is no denying that he was made for the big stage.
In addition, Patrick Mahomes has now trailed by double digits in each of his four Super Bowl appearances. He’s 3-1 in these circumstances, including the victory over the 49ers; the one defeat came, of course, against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Bucs in the 2020 campaign.
Mahomes is without a doubt the NFL’s comeback king, and no one else even comes close.
